On April 12th big fashion dreams will come true in a way befitting a city itself a product of one man’s grand vision! DEPESHA magazine is presenting the American Program at Aurora Fashion Week Russia in St. Petersburg. This much anticipated series of fashion events will feature a capsule collection tribute to the iconic style of Ludmila Gurchenko by the Russian-American designer Leonid Gurevich, who worked extensively with the late Russian acting and singing star.
“Through the Cold War, the cultural thaw, perestroika and all the ups and downs of the era, Ludmila Gurchenko remained an embodiment of individuality. She was and continues to be my Muse. Russia’s favorite Songbird, she performed in my dresses. Impossible to describe what this invitation means to me. It was in Leningrad (St Petersburg) that she always found support and inspiration even in the most dramatic moments of her life. This is a high honor, which also coincides with the 20th anniversary of my emigration from Russia,” commented Gurevich.
Gurevich caught the grand fashion bug in the wardrobe workshops of the Bolshoi Theater in Moscow frequently visiting his mother who worked as an embroiderer there. As a student at the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT), Gurevich was awarded the prestigious CFDA Scholarship Award and became the first student ever to be featured on the cover of the FIT Magazine. He continues to develop capsule collections and work with private atelier clients, presenting his works at various venues including the Museum of Russian Art. As a fashion illustrator, Gurevich has worked with designers Zac Posen, Alecia Zameska and Anya Caliendo Couture Millinery Atelier among others. Celebrities who have worn his clothes include Lil Kim, Sasha Gradiva, Ari Gold, Doe Deere, Amanda Lepore, and Daphne Guinness. A fashion statement in and of himself, his photos frequent style and celebrity blogs and recently he landed in the New York Times under the “Head Turners” title, photographed by the legendary Bill Cunningham.
