An unforgettable show during the Fall/Winter 2016 NY Fashion Week was undeniably the Naeem Khan. The glamour and opulence that we associate with Naeem Khan took center stage at the biggest stage at Skylight at Moynihan Station on February 17th, 2016. Naeem Khan is an Indian-American fashion designer, raised in Mumbai, India and based in New York who launched his clothing company back in 2003.
He is a favorite on the red carpet with the likes of Beyonce, Eva Longoria, and even First Lady Michelle Obama donning his gowns. It only seemed appropriate that fashion stylist Robert Verdi and bridal connoisseur Colin Cowie were in the front row, avidly taking pictures during the show for their celebrity clients. Khan was all about New York this year as New York’s prominent Art Deco influence inspired his designs as “a parallel between this spirited city and it’s dynamic women.” The severe Victorian inspired hair worn by the models and the beautiful baubles designed by his wife Ranjana Khan decorating the ears of the models all fit in with this theme.
The 49 look collection had a lot of gold, silver, black, and red, which is apparently Khan’s favorite color. And how many of Khan’s looks could be worn on the red carpet was all one could think about during the show. Khan’s strengths again are his intricate hand beaded detailing and his use of sequins and crystals, which oozed and dripped from his garments. He had a variety of pieces but standouts were his onyx and white beaded baroque knee length coat, ruby ball gown with embroidered bodice and tiered pleated tulle skirt, gold embroidered long sleeve jumpsuit, and silver metallic hammered sequin floor length cape. Capes were a huge trend in a lot of the shows at fashion week this year but none had as much glitz as Khan’s capes. Khan also debuted his handbag collection on the runway, with the models carrying his fabulous, boxy clutches.
The real star of the show was Trinity Faith Moran, an 11 year old girl diagnosed with cancer who had made a wish through the Make A Wish Foundation to strut down the runway at Naeem’s Khan show. Khan had designed a beautiful red dress for Trinity and he closed the show by walking down the runway with her hand in hand.
